In her regular column in this Saturday’s Globe and Mail, “Suddenly, I’m the oldest person in the room – and I love it”, Margaret Wente describes the process of aging in the workplace as “both thrilling and terrifying.” Until we’re in our 50’s, she writes, “we’ve had a checklist of things we were supposed to do (go to school, graduate, leave home, job-hop, find vocation, settle down, mate, buy property, reproduce, put the kids through school).” By the time we reach the status of elder statesperson at work, she concludes, “The checklist is done.”

I was supposed to be a lawyer. But I’m not.
That’s one of the many stories about my life that I tell people when they ask me, “What’s your story?” There are others… sometimes I say I’m a photographer (works well when holding a camera at a function and taking pictures of people I don’t know – and heck, sometimes I actually AM the photographer, so go figure). Or a producer. Or a writer/producer/photographer/researcher (that’s what my card says). (Really.)

I’m busy. It’s the first time I’ve felt busy in three months. I know it’s been that long, because it was exactly three months ago today that I declared that there would be no busi/ness in my life until August had ended. I took the summer off, period. I had an amazing, eye-opening, fun and fanciful season. And then this week, just like that, September showed up. And I got all busy. Continue reading
